Clinical Studies of Innovative Non-Invasive Cerebrovascular Autoregulation Monitoring Technology (SKAR2)

Project no.: MIP-087/2015

Project description:

Pathophysiological processes in the injured brain proceed quickly and are very risky for human life. The last studies show that it is not enough to measure intracranial pressure and arterial blood pressure for traumatic brain injury patient. The Brain Trauma Foundation (USA) reported that the monitoring of cerebrovascular autoregulation (CA) is an only tool for fine-tune individual patient treatment and the different treatment strategies should be applied depending on the status of cerebrovascular autoregulation. The aim of this research is to perform investigation of the innovative non-invasive CA monitoring method and to obtain the new fundamental and empirical knowledge about the possibilities to apply the method for diagnosing and monitoring of CA status in the traumatic brain injured patients, neurological patients and healthy volunteers as well. The collection and comparative analysis of the traumatic brain injury and neurological patients CA data will be performed simultaneously by using innovative non-invasive and invasive CA monitoring methods during project implementation. Additionally, the possibilities to increase the amplitude of intracranial slow waves will be explored by performing special cyclic breathing tests in order to estimated CA status according the transient dynamics of non-invasively measured intracranial blood volume changes. Applicability of these tests will be explored on clinical patients and healthy volunteers. The new fundamental knowledge of applicability of innovative non-invasive CA monitoring method in clinical practice as well as better understanding of CA mechanism in neurological and traumatic brain injury patients will be obtained while implementing the project.
